Customs Formalities

On entering Serbia and Montenegro (excluding Kosovo) be sure to have an entry stamp in your passport from the border police. Not having a stamp may cause problems with the police or border police.

Currency. Foreign currencies may be brought into the country freely with no restrictions as to the amount of currencies imported. Visitors may declare a foreign currency to the customs officer and receive a receipt allowing them to take it out on leaving the country. Foreigners are free to take any amount under 5000 EUR out of Serbia without proof. For a sum exceeding this, one needs to have a letter from the bank proving a withdrawal from a foreign exchange or savings account.

Art objects. Special permits are needed for the exportation of original objects of cultural, artistic, archeological, ethnographic, historical or scientific value. The permit can be obtained from the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations.

Wildlife trophies may be exported if accompanied by: the permission of the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations in the Republic for stuffed animals and parts thereof OR a game shooting certificate in the case of other trophies.

Car insurance. Motorised visitors are required to have an international insurance card valid in the territory of Serbia. If not, the competent authorities (Automobile Association – AMSS, not the customs authorities!) charge the amount of compulsory insurance on entering the country.

Note: The Serbian authorities do not recognise as official the external border crossings of Kosovo. It is therefore advised not to enter Serbia through Kosovo.
