Vojvodina is the opposite of Serbia - Serbia is as mountainous as Vojvodina is flat and Serbia is as flat as Vojvodina is mountainous. Apart from the hills of Fru ška Gora and Vršačke Planine, there is nothing to disturb the view over the endless plain, bottom of the Pannonian Sea from long ago, over which only tractors and combines are sailing now fighting the waves of wheat or sunflowers. Sticking out like islands in that sea are bell towers of Orthodox, Catholic, Uniate, Evangelistic, Calvinistic baroque churches and silos which are never empty. |

Three great rivers flow through this region - Danube, Sava and Tisa - and divide it in three parts - Srem, Banat and Bačka. Long had these provinces been apart rather than parts until in 1848 when they first united, as requested by Serbs living in all three provinces, and were given a new name - "Srpska Vojvodina" which became a crown land of Austrian Empire. Vojvodina is now an autonomous province of the Republic of Serbia with its own parliament and unobtrusively protects its individuality. |

"Be quick slowly" is a motto in these parts. The people, as if somewhat sleepy, slowly but with certainty perform their work knowing that the rich plain brings deserved rewards. A fertile plain gives enough for all who live here, hence, all do live here: Serbians, Hungarians, Romanians, Slovakians, Ukrainians, Croats, Czechs, . and many more, all of them have come here in search of a better life and all have learned its worth. Beautiful cities are ornamented with buildings dating from the days of Habsburg Monarchy. Though the Germans are gone, quite a bit of their efficiency and order has remained which is achieved without tension or force. |

Situated at the wide banks of Danube, shadowed by the mighty Petrovaradin Fort, is the city Novi Sad, cultural and artistic center of the province. Even though this is a large city, the atmosphere there is relaxed, which calms and inspires. Towards the North is the city of Subotica which connects Serbia to Europe not only physically but also by its secession architecture and active economy. The city which has moved to the side a bit, Sombor, has a rich history to enjoy in, the greenery and slow pace . The town Sremska Mitrovica, called Sirmium in the Classical Period, was one of four Roman Empire capitals and gave the name to entire province of Srem. Tucked in between the Danube and the hills of Fru ška Gora is the town of Sremski Karlovci , the spiritual center of Serbs for many centuries, but also one of the centers of European viticulture which provided the wine that bought the privileges of autonomy from Hapsburg monarchs. Another town which grew beside vineyards is Vršac with its low and yet wild hills. Nowadays only ponds and swamps are reminiscent of Vojvodina landscape before drainage, like Carska Bara and Obedska Bara. |

Many ethnical and cultural events of the people of Vojvodina mix with the competitions which celebrate the bountifulness of nature and enthusiasm of the inhabitants who, after all, love the best to enjoy the fruits of their work with food, drink and song, in peace. |
